This is (was) Chain of Craters Road. They allow hiking here - but had a list of cautions and warnings a mile long. We weren't allowed within 1/4 mile of the shore once in the active flow area. Sections of flow (benches) frequently collapse into the sea. In December 1996 a huge 27 acre bench dropped into the ocean without warning.
A shot of the cooled flow. They told us that the lava is 2,100 degrees Farenheit (1,140 C) when it meets the water. The results are usually spectacular.
I wish the colors had show up better. There were sections of finely spun glass, and glass beads (Pele's Hair and Tears), and the rock inside fractures sparkled with a rainbow of colors- almost a colorful as these flowers.
